This research project proposes the design of a virtual learning environment that contributes to the strengthening of numerical thinking in third grade students, focusing on basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, combined problems, multiplication by one and two digits and division. The methodology was developed under an empirical-analytical paradigm, based on a quantitative approach. The population was represented by 124 third grade students of the San José Educational Institution of the central headquarters; a probabilistic sample was used, constituted by 45 students belonging to the third grade groups, being the object of study 15 students of each course. To collect information, a questionnaire was applied as a diagnostic test, made up of 20 items, organized in 6 sections (addition, subtraction, combined problems, multiplication, division and a self-evaluation section), in order to identify previous knowledge and present difficulties in numerical thinking. Based on the results obtained, a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) called “Playing with numbers” was built as a viable alternative to strengthen numerical thinking with a view to improving the academic performance of students. This VLE was designed using the WordPress platform, integrating animated images, sounds and interactive activities that facilitate the understanding of the concepts.
