This study investigates the concepts of social cognition and political orientation in young university students aged 18 to 25, with the aim of understanding their influence on the youth population during the pre-electoral framework of the mayor's office of Cúcuta in 2023. It focuses on 61 men and 61 women students from the Simón Bolívar University. The research approach is quantitative and positivist, using a non-experimental design, for an observable and systematic analysis with the aim of specifying in statistical terms from obtaining the results. Variables such as social thinking, social sensitivity, prosocial leadership, among others, were evaluated, along with the political interests of young people. In addition, the BIS/BAS instrument was used to assess decision-making, impulsivity, and behavioral inhibition, and the CEMCA to obtain sociodemographic data and data on behaviors such as collaboration and aggression. These results contrast with a previous study conducted in Bogotá in 2019, which allows for a broader understanding of the political and behavioral inclinations of young university students, providing useful results for future political campaigns and possible public regulations that may benefit the border region of Cúcuta. The results revealed that the majority of participants leaned to the left in terms of political orientation, while the items associated with the right were low. Regarding social cognition, young people showed high scores in social sensitivity, leadership, and prosocial attitudes, among others. In contrast, they showed low scores in aggressiveness, stubbornness, apathy, and withdrawal.
