Human beings undergo processes of self-discovery in various areas of their lives, allowing them to explore and identify characteristics that define their identity. One of the purposes of life is to discover what gives meaning to one's existence, including aspects related to sexuality and sexual-affective experiences. In this sense, sexual diversity presents itself as a life option for people whose sexual practices, affective bonds, and identities deviate from historically hegemonic heteronormative norms. Therefore, reflecting on sexual diversity in different contexts, including academia and higher education, poses a challenge due to the associated prejudices and stigmas. The most evident social issues are discrimination and homophobia, which may be caused by social pressure, various moral norms, and religious currents, exerting significant power over society and causing some individuals to hide their true sexual orientation for fear of rejection (Muñoz, Basurdo & Vega, 2014; Ardila, 1998). However, the LGBTQ+ movements, through their struggles, have achieved various human rights victories and greater recognition and visibility in some of our Western societies over time. Regarding the process of self-discovery and self-awareness of sexual orientation, this work aims to address it from a perspective that includes the participation of people who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ population. Therefore, the following research question is proposed: How is the process of self-discovery of diverse sexual orientation in university students aged 19 to 22 in the city of Barranquilla?
