Under the current global circumstances, for the universities, especially for the Simón Bolívar University, a new challenge has arisen in the face of high-level education, its economic sustainability and its commitment to the founding objectives of allowing access to high-level education to the community, mainly for those with low incomes. Furthermore, in the present research, it sought to formulate alternative financing strategies, to contribute to economic sustainability through the diversification of current sources of income, supported by theories such as the triple helix and academic spin-offs. This was achieved through the method of case study, under a cross-sectional approach, conducting interviews and focus groups, applied to executives of the Simón Bolívar University at the strategic and tactical level, and representatives from national and international institutions linked to the educational-financial system, taking a non-probabilistic sample intentionally. To sum things up, high level education institutions must seek strategies that allow them to create self-sustainable business units and contribute to the community’s social, economic, technological, and scientific progress, fulfilling its role as a university as a training entity and generator of entrepreneurship.
