Introduction: Social anxiety is a mental disorder that causes intense and irrational fear when the person is exposed to social interactions or when performing activities in the presence of strangers. It manifests itself between the ages of 16 to 26 years, which coincides with the age of most young people entering college. Social anxiety can be fostered by automatic thoughts, which produce disqualification and low performance in activities. These variables interfere with the adequate performance of tasks, execution of activities, academic performance, interpersonal relationships, mood, substance use and even the desire for life. Method: The sample consisted of 100 students (88 women, 11 men) between 16 and 26 years of age from the psychology program without socioeconomic discrimination who agreed to participate in the study. They filled out the automatic thoughts questionnaire (ATQ) and the Liebowitz social anxiety scale. The participants' basic sociodemographic and academic data were also recorded. Results: significant results were obtained regarding the relationship between scales of thoughts and social anxiety in young university students, which when studied and analyzed we see that the scale that has the highest relationship to others is the negative self-concept, presenting strong relationships with the thoughts of: Helplessness, self-reproaches, poor adaptation and fear and anxiety. Women presented higher scores on the helplessness and avoidance scales. Men, like women, presented higher scores on the helplessness scale and high scores on the fear scale and total anxiety. Conclusions: the levels of anxiety in these university students are within what is expected for the academic situation in which they find themselves, several manifest an increase in the levels of anxiety before the week of exams, reporting thoughts of helplessness and general concern about their academic performance.
