The department of La Guajira, located in the north of Colombia, has long faced a situation of poverty and inequality that has significantly affected the quality of life of its population. This region, despite being rich in natural resources, has historically suffered from a series of structural challenges that have exacerbated poverty and social exclusion. One of the main factors that contribute to poverty in La Guajira is the lack of access to basic services such as drinking water, sanitation, electricity and quality education. According to various reports, many Wayuu indigenous communities in the region lack reliable access to potable water, resulting in disease and malnutrition, especially among children. La Guajira has also experienced a high unemployment rate and an undiversified economy, which has limited employment opportunities and has perpetuated poverty in the region. The dependence of the coal industry and the lack of investment in other productive sectors have contributed the lack of formal employment and underemployment in the area. In response to this situation, it is critical to implement policies and programs that address the lack of access to basic services, promote economic diversification, and offer sustainable employment opportunities to the community.
