This study analyzes how the entrepreneurial ecosystem influences the growth of technology-based ventures (TBVs) in regions with varying levels of absorption capacity. It is based on the premise that a robust ecosystem—with access to financing, knowledge networks, mentors, specialized human capital, and favorable public policies—can enhance TBVs’ performance, provided that firms or the region possess the ability to assimilate and leverage these resources. To test this hypothesis, a comparative study was conducted in two Colombian territories: Barranquilla, characterized by more consolidated infrastructure and networks, and Valledupar, marked by institutional fragmentation and limited resources. The research draws on resource-based theory and entrepreneurial ecosystem literature, highlighting the role of financing, entrepreneurial culture, and absorption capacity (both organizational and territorial). Primary and secondary data on growth indicators (sales, employment, strategic alliances) and ecosystem variables (infrastructure, financing, policy support) were collected. Statistical analysis revealed that the relationship between the ecosystem and TBV growth is not linear but depends on the strength of the environment and the ability to internalize external knowledge. In Barranquilla, where absorption capacity and ecosystem density are higher, a significant positive impact on TBV sales was observed. Conversely, Valledupar’s weaker environment and low actor coordination hindered the translation of available resources into measurable growth. The findings confirm that entrepreneurial ecosystems significantly affect TBV growth only when sufficient resources coexist with adequate absorption capacity, allowing knowledge incorporation and opportunity capitalization. While the hypothesis was validated for Barranquilla, it was rejected for Valledupar, underscoring the need to strengthen both ecosystem conditions and absorption capacity in emerging regions. These results have practical implications for policy design and support strategies, emphasizing investment not only in resource availability but also in skill development and network formation to enable comprehensive resource utilization.eng
