The elderly go through significant changes in their lives, and many external factors have a significant impact on their physical and mental health. Social and family factors, as well as psychological causes, have a considerable impact on their lives, as they lose a sense of purpose, which leads to suicidal thoughts and ideas. Therefore, the general objective of this study was to identify the levels of suicidal ideation in older adults in the department of Atlántico. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive design. Thirty individuals from the elderly population residing in the department of Atlántico participated, using the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation and a questionnaire for collecting sociodemographic data. The results obtained indicate that 4.4% of the sample manifests a prevalence of suicidal ideation, while 84% corresponds to a score of 0, which is the lowest level of prevalence of suicidal ideation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the prevalence of suicidal ideation in older adults in the department of Atlántico is low. However, it is demonstrated that the prevalence of these thoughts is directly related to risk factors, such as family losses.
