Introducción: El consumo de alimentos poco saludables y la disminución de actividad física en los niños es un problema de magnitud global. Objetivo: Determinar las prácticas relacionadas con la alimentación y la práctica de actividad física en niños de 8 a 12 años en una institución educativa del municipio de Candelaria en el departamento del Atlántico. Metodología: Estudio analítico de corte transversal en 186 escolares entre 8 a 12 años que asisten a una institución educativa del municipio Candelaria, en el departamento del Atlántico, seleccionados mediante muestreo aleatorio. Se realizó tamizaje antropométrico, recopilación de datos sociodemográficos, cumplimiento de recomendaciones para la actividad física y frecuencia de consumo de alimentos. Resultados: Mayor participación de niñas en el estudio (53,5%) y el promedio de edad con una media de 10,7±1,1 años. El 70,3% no cumplen las recomendaciones para la práctica de actividad física. Fue mayor el consumo alimentos no saludables (papas fritas) en las niñas (2,7±2,9 porciones) que en los niños (1,7±2,4 porciones) (p=0,03). El consumo de verduras se incrementa en la medida en que la edad aumenta (p=0,0001). Conclusiones: Se identificaron diferencias por sexo y edad en cuanto al estado nutricional y el cumplimiento de la actividad física, lo que resalta la importancia de intervenciones personalizadas según las características demográficas de los escolares.

Objective: Determine the practices related to nutrition and the practice of physical activity in children from 8 to 12 years old in an educational institution in the municipality of Candelaria in the department of Atlántico. Methodology: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in 186 schoolchildren between 8 and 12 years old who attend an educational institution in the municipality of Candelaria, in the department of Atlántico, selected by random sampling. Anthropometric screening, collection of sociodemographic data, compliance with recommendations for physical activity and frequency of food consumption were carried out. Results: Girls participated more in the study (53.5%) and the average age was 10.7±1.1 years. 70.3% did not meet the recommendations for physical activity. Unhealthy food consumption (French fries) was higher in girls (2.7±2.9 portions) tan in boys (1.7±2.4 portions) (p=0.03). Vegetable consumption increased with age (p=0.0001). Conclusions: Differences by sex and age were identified in terms of nutritional status and compliance with physical activity, which highlights the importance of personalized interventions according to the demographic characteristics of the schoolchildren.
