Resumen
El sedentarismo, entendido como la falta de actividad física suficiente, se ha convertido en un factor de riesgo relevante para la salud física y mental de los jóvenes universitarios. Este trabajo de investigación analiza el impacto del sedentarismo en la salud mental de los estudiantes de la Universidad Simón Bolívar, explorando la prevalencia de hábitos sedentarios, los factores contextuales y personales que los propician, así como la relación entre la inactividad física y la aparición de síntomas de ansiedad y depresión.
La investigación se desarrolló bajo un enfoque metodológico mixto, empleando un diseño convergente paralelo que permitió integrar simultáneamente métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos para analizar de manera integral el impacto del sedentarismo en la salud mental de los estudiantes universitarios. La muestra estuvo conformada por 98 estudiantes de la Universidad Simón Bolívar, en Barranquilla, Colombia, seleccionados mediante un muestreo probabilístico para la fase cuantitativa y un muestreo intencional para la cualitativa, lo que garantizó diversidad en términos de género, edad y programas académicos. La participación fue voluntaria y se respetaron los principios éticos de confidencialidad y consentimiento informado.
Sedentary lifestyle, understood as lack of sufficient physical activity, has become a relevant risk factor for the physical and mental health of young university students. This research paper analyzes the impact of sedentary lifestyle on the mental health of students from Simón Bolívar University, exploring the prevalence of sedentary habits, the contextual and personal factors that as well as the relationship between physical inactivity and the onset of anxiety and depression symptoms. The present research was developed under a mixed methodological approach, using a parallel convergent design that simultaneously integrated quantitative and qualitative methods to comprehensively analyze the impact of sedentary lifestyle on the mental health of university students. The sample consisted of 98 students from Universidad Simón Bolívar, in Barranquilla, Colombia, selected by probabilistic sampling for the quantitative phase and intentional sampling for the qualitative, which ensured diversity in terms of gender, age and academic programmes. Participation was voluntary and the ethical principles of confidentiality and informed consent were respected.
