descriptores: bipolar disorder AND (cbt or cognitive behavioural therapy or cognitive
behavioral therapy) AND (treatment or intervention or therapy) en inglés y español.
Bipolar disorder is characterized by emotional fluctuations ranging from depressive episodes to manic peaks. Globally, it is estimated that around 40 million people live with the disorder, with symptoms typically beginning between the ages of 15 and 25, often with an initial episode of depression. The aim of the present study was to conduct a review of recent advances in the intervention and treatment of bipolar affective disorder from a cognitive-behavioral model, focusing on the period between 2019 and 2023. The review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was conducted using the EBSCO database. A Boolean search equation was created using the descriptors: bipolar disorder AND (cbt OR cognitive behavioural therapy OR cognitive behavioral therapy) AND (treatment OR intervention OR therapy) in both English and Spanish. The initial search yielded 226 documents; after applying the inclusion criteria, 27 full-text articles were selected for review. The results confirm that psychotherapeutic interventions, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), have proven effective in reducing symptoms among the target population. Evidence shows that CBT either as a standalone intervention or in combination with other treatment modalities, such as direct patient interventions or pharmacological mediation enhances treatment adherence and improves symptom control.
