| spa |
dc.description.abstract | Background: Aging is a natural process of the life cycle that has gained great relevance in the last 30 years due to the progressive increase in human life expectancy. Likewise, a significant number of studies have associated Metabolic Syndrome (MS) with a greater risk of cognitive decline, although some others have yielded inconclusive results. For this reason, the objective of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between the cognitive performance of older adults participating in the 2011 to 2014 cycles in the NHANES and SM studies, including their different diagnostic combinations. For this purpose, a first phase of in -depth documentary research of the scientific literature related to the topic was carried out and subsequently the design and writing of two articles that have been published in research journals were carried out. These two works deal with the evolution of the concept of MS and the pathophysiological mechanisms shared between cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and MS, delving into possible alterations in insulin signaling and defects in insulin transport. glucose in the central nervous system, as part of the possible molecular mechanisms related to cognitive decline and the development of AD. In the second phase of this study, the relationship between the deterioration in the neuropsychological performance of older adults and the diagnosis of MS was investigated, including its different diagnostic combinations. Objective: To determine if there is a relationship between the cognitive performance of older adults participating in the 2011 to 2014 cycles in the NHANES study and metabolic syndrome, including its different diagnostic combinations. Materials and Methods: This work consists of a compendium of articles that have been published in research journals. In which the first two articles are reviews and in the third article a non-experimental cross-sectional study, of comparative and correlational scope, was carried out on a sample of 3,179 adults over 60 years of age from the National Survey. Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011-2014 to analyze the relationship between metabolic syndrome and cognitive impairment. The composition of these two cohorts has the following demographic characteristics: 48.51% (n=1542) are men and 51.49% (n=1637) are women, with the arithmetic mean age for both sexes being 69.48±6.78 (CV =9.76%) years. | eng |
