Resumen
La historia de Barranquilla ha estado estrechamente relacionada con su actividad industrial. Consolidada en 1871 como el primer puerto marítimo y fluvial del país, fue clave para su desarrollo la navegación a vapor por el río Magdalena, luego la construcción del ferrocarril, la cual permitió un aumento más que proporcional en la aduana de Sabanilla, debido indudablemente a la operación del ferrocarril entre el puerto marítimo y el fluvial de Barranquilla, llegando a ser la ciudad con más alta tasa de crecimiento económico y demográfico. Inicialmente impulsada por el comercio, a través del puerto fluvial y marítimo se conectó al interior del país con los principales mercados internacionales. El comienzo del fin de la “edad de oro” de Barranquilla llegó con la inauguración del Canal de Panamá en 1914 y la modernización del puerto de Buenaventura durante los años veinte; los peores años de la crisis tuvieron lugar en las décadas de los cincuenta y los sesenta. Las tasas de crecimiento del empleo industrial cayeron y la informalidad aumentó. Por ello, se ha reflexionado acerca de Barranquilla como ciudad de crecimiento económico en el siglo XXI, para lo cual se revisó literatura de diversos autores e instituciones que a lo largo de la corta historia de esta ciudad, han venido plasmando todo ese proceso de crecimiento, estancamiento y resurrección al desarrollo de esta urbe colombiana., comparándolos con otros países, lo que permitió conocer el avance que ha tenido en el ranking mundial de logística, la importancia de los puertos en la historia colombiana y el desarrollo de los pueblos que tienen puerto. Presentando información muy valiosa y constructiva sobre esta ciudad, su puerto y su economía. Concluyendo que, el desarrollo económico de Barranquilla, se debe en gran parte al crecimiento de exportaciones e importaciones consolidadas durante el siglo XXI, y que la modernización no solo de la zona portuaria de Barranquilla, sino la de la Costa
Caribe (Santa Marta y Cartagena) e inclusive Buenaventura, han permitido al país avanzar en el ranking LPI (Logistics Performance Index) que actualmente ocupa el puesto 58 entre 160 países.

Industrial employment growth rates fell and informality increased. For this reason, Barranquilla has been reflected in the growth of the 21st century, for which literature from various authors and institutions was reviewed. Throughout the short history of this city, they have been transforming this growth process. , stagnation and resurrection to the development of this Colombian city, comparing them with other countries, which allowed to know the progress that had in the world ranking of logistics.
