This research work addresses the incidence of eco-efficiency in process innovation in intermunicipal transportation companies in Santo Tomás. The main purpose is to analyze the incorporation of eco-efficient techniques in the transportation industry and examine the obstacles and possibilities for their implementation. Eco-efficiency has been the focus of attention since 1991, when the World Business Council for Sustainable Development introduced the term "eco-efficiency." Since then, there has been a growing emphasis on continuously reviewing business models to reduce inputs and mitigate the negative environmental impact of companies. The method used in this study is a mixed approach that included a review of scientific and technical literature, as well as surveys conducted with intermunicipal transportation companies in Santo Tomás. Data were collected on the knowledge and adoption of eco-efficient practices, technologies used, challenges encountered, and results achieved. The results revealed that, although some companies have started implementing eco-efficient practices, significant challenges still exist. Financial limitations, lack of awareness and knowledge, and lack of collaboration among stakeholders were identified as the main barriers. However, promising opportunities were identified. The adoption of eco-efficient technologies, such as hybrid or electric vehicles and intelligent fleet management systems, could be an effective strategy to improve eco-efficiency in intermunicipal transportation. Eco-efficiency not only has environmental benefits but also financial and social benefits. The reduction of pollutant emissions can lead to cost savings in operational expenses and improve the quality of life in the local area. Additionally, implementing eco-efficient practices can enhance the corporate reputation of companies and attract environmentally conscious customers. To achieve greater eco-efficiency in intermunicipal transportation, the implementation of favorable government policies, financial incentives, education, and collaboration among companies, local authorities, and civil society are required.
