Alcohol consumption during adolescence is one of the leading public health concerns worldwide due to its numerous adverse consequences for young people's overall development. This stage of the life course is characterized by profound physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes. Therefore, early initiation of alcohol use may interfere with the maturation process and increase vulnerability to a range of psychological difficulties. In Colombia, alcohol consumption among adolescents remains common and often begins at an early age. This situation has attracted increasing attention from the scientific community because its consequences extend beyond the individual, affecting families, schools, and society as a whole. Available research consistently indicates that adolescent alcohol use increases the likelihood of developing substance use disorders in adulthood and is associated with emotional, behavioral, and social difficulties that negatively affect well-being and quality of life. Against this background, the purpose of this monograph was to analyze research advances regarding the relationship between alcohol consumption and the mental health of Colombian adolescents in order to identify the main findings reported in the national scientific literature and provide an integrated understanding of this phenomenon.
